Cosplay Planning Tips

Planning is essential when putting together new costumes and cosplays. A lot of people struggle with being organised – myself included – but organisation for a costume is key. You really want to try to avoid ‘con crunch’, where you find yourself still sewing or painting part of your cosplay the night before the convention. Read below to find out my top tips for planning a cosplay and staying organised.

· Collect reference images. Download as many reference images of the costume and character as you can. This helps for reference, so you can research any details or pattern pieces.

· I recommend using the app Cosplanner. It allows for you to plan out each element of your cosplays, including pricing and any aspects you need to make. You can store reference and progress images on it too. I use it for all of my cosplay planning now, and I don’t know what I’d do without it!

Look out for this app on the App Store and Google Play.

· Budget. Make sure you decide on how much money you want to spend on a costume. Cosplaying is definitely not very cheap, so budgeting can really help you to keep costs down. Be warned, that even though a budget is in place, be prepared to go over.

· Research. Definitely do plenty of research into what materials you want to use, or where you are going to buy your cosplay. Look at plenty of tutorials and reviews to help guide your decisions.

· Pick a character you love. I see so many social media posts with people asking which character they could cosplay. And almost all of the answers, every time, is to cosplay a character you like. Don’t be concerned about what characters you naturally look like – just cosplay them anyway. Have fun with it!
