Wig Tips

Updated: Mar 28, 2019

I am not the best person to ask for wig tips since I am not too confident in working with them. But, needs must, so I do have a little experience. Here are some basic tips in relation to cosplay wigs.

· There are a few types of wig. There are pre-styled wigs, which of course, already come styled. My short male cosplay wigs are pre-styled. Pre-styled wigs are great to commission if you are not confident about working with wigs. There are lace front wigs, which are expensive, but look the most realistic. They have lace sewn into the front of them so they provide you with a realistic looking hairline. There are also plenty of standard, non-lace front wigs out there. They are usually quite cheap but can end up looking shiny as they are synthetic. They can come pre-styled, but you can change them up a bit.

My Satine wig is a lace front. You can see the hairline looks realistic on me.

· Pick out heat-resistant wigs. When shopping online, it will usually tell you if a wig is heat-resistant. This means they can be styled easily with straighteners and curlers. Non heat-resistant wigs will melt and you don’t want that!

· When cutting wigs, don’t just cut across horizontally. Cut with the scissor blades pointing upwards. This will give the wig a more natural look.

I styled my Katya wig myself. The upwards cutting motion allowed for my wig to look less choppy.

· Store your wigs on wig heads, or in the bags they come in. Longer wigs are best stored by plaiting the long hair to avoid tangles. If you put them back in the bags, use the hairnet they come with.

· Get yourself a wig cap to wear under your wig. These are like hairnets, and they’ll just keep your hair from sticking out under the wig. Don’t forget to pin this, and the wig to your head too! Lots of wig sellers usually include wig caps in the package along with the wig.

· Be careful with long wigs as they tangle easily. There are many methods to detangle a wig, so do some searching around online for what will work best for you!

· Putting a wig on is simple. Pull it on front to back – so line up the front of the wig at the top of your forehead, and pull it down over your head. Pull down on the tabs by the ears to ensure it’s straight and on top of your head correctly.

When styling, I recommend Got2Be hairspray and gel. It’s super strong and works really well for styling odd shapes!
